Making As Learning

The story of my Doctoral research

This film describes my Doctoral cross-disciplinary materials research and how it has influenced my new sculptural artworks. Making as Learning is central to my practice as a sculptural textile artist, weaver and researcher. My artworks evolve through interacting with materials and processes, during what Donald A. Schon would describe as a 'conversation with materials'.

During my Doctoral research I created a new hybrid material called Metal Integral Skeleton Textiles using what social anthropologist Jean Lave defined as a 'Situated Learning' approach. My research demonstrates that combining a researcher’s tacit skills alongside learning new skills from cross-disciplinary specialists facilitates innovative research outcomes.
